Reverse:  Inscription in five lines: · IOHAN : · / COM : LOVDOVN · / SVMMVS · SCOTIÆ / CANCELLARIVS / · 1645 · (John, Earl of Loudoun, Lord Chancellor of Scotland).

John Campbell (1598-1663), 1st Earl of Loudoun, was Lord Chancellor of Scotland from 1641-1660. He had earlier been imprisoned and sentenced to death by Charles I for his involvment with the Covenanters, but was pardoned. During the English Civil War he sought to mediate between Charles and Parliament, and was present at the coronation of Charles II as King of Scotland in 1650.
